Surprise, surprise! Ever since my father told me as a little boy to hoe that long, long row of potatoes, I sort of tried to ignore gardening. But, these days, gardening is really not a choice, but at today’s grocery prices, it’s a mandate. So, we built a Tentnology company garden! A no-brainer for Tentnology, but it’s been a learning process. To keep those pesky chickens from uprooting everything, a glass-clear TSpan greenhouse did the trick. Conning others Tom Sawyer-like into weeding, pruning and coaxing vegetables along has been a challenge. Knowing when and what to grow, how to plant when, is quite another (we’ll have enough squash and potatoes to feed the plant forever). We’ve already started dropping zucchini on neighbours’ doorsteps and running.

Of course, garden plants need to be pollinated. Corn needs wind; most other plants need flying insects like bees to romance the plants. But a greenhouse keeps marauding chickens and rabbits out, as well as breezes carrying flying insects. So, when the corn had some kernels missing, farmers amongst Tentnology staff removed a roof panel to let those little flying blighters in.
Our Fijian Superintendent Ali, born to farms and orchards, told us when to hill the potatoes and trim the tomatoes. So, now we design tents, run a business and hold meetings … with our tomatoes.
Now Suzanne is elbow deep in sauerkraut from massive cabbages, when she’s not dill pickling cucumbers. I hate the work, but when dinner time comes, love those fresh vegetables and farm kitchen aroma.
Tentnology’s GreenHaus might be a commercial success soon, but it’s already a culinary coup.
